Maritime Weekly
Insights for Senior Maritime Executives
27 Feb 2016

Greetings from Maritime Weekly (MW).MW is a weekly newsletter published by Maritime World Services, a research, executive search, and events management platform for the global maritime ecosystem. Our editorial board comprising reputed maritime, logistics, and media leaders curates key maritime news and analyses once a week, to support you in making informed decisions in the week ahead.

What's Topical This Week

With increasing wealth and a growing middle class, ASEAN countries and intra-ASEAN trade represent a significant opportunity. The spot rates on the North Asia to Europe and Mediterranean trade lanes have dropped, not least due to the new year holidays in China. The on-going economic rebalancing in China and consequent consolidation of two large shipping lines enable CMA-CGM- which recently acquired NOL-to explore reconfiguration of its alliances.

A Drewry study suggests cooperation, price hikes and better investment acumen among ways to boost profits for ports and terminals. French terminal operator Bollore is close to finalising four terminal operating concessions and January has been a good month for container volumes in major Indian ports.

While freight rail contributes significantly to global economies as a part of integrated transportation, building an Africa wide rail network across multiple borders would be a challenge and, there is work to be done in aligning the basis of port dues, to make Ro-Ro coastal shipping effective in India.

To strengthen the domestic shipbuilding industry, Poland is working to build passenger vessels and gas tankers and Daewoo shipyards have launched a task force to manage the risk of cancelled orders for new buildings. From the maritime capital perspective, the Zhejiang government in China is integrating three ports in the province and the Indian government is roping in multilateral agencies to fund its ambitious port connectivity program-Sagarmala.

In the technology and people section, we bring you insights from Wipro on how smart ports can contribute to Africa’s growth and insights on the potential of vessel condition monitoring with available data. Also, Ditlev Blicher is the new APAC CEO of DB Schenker.

In the leisure section we bring you inputs on why global cruise vacations are growing faster than land based ones and an update on the revival of lighthouse tourism in Maharashtra, India

Have a great week ahead.
